Week 9 - Intangible to Me

This week's assignment to was to "Embedding your own style of ideation process in your daily ritual". At this point in the semester I've found myself really busy and, at times, seemingly running from meeting, to class, and back to another meeting. In the rush of it all I did not make proper time to fully reflect and ideate on the Intangible Interaction Call for Proposals.

However, I have been thinking about how to incorporate and aspect of 'intangible' interaction into my projects, and as I've sat here writing, done some reflection about what intangibility means to me.

During my undergraduate degree, I was interested in the hidden layers of complexity that digital technology relied on. The web of complicated code and libraries, to how our personal data is collected and stored. And so far in this semester at ITP, I've been enjoying thinking about energy. How it's generated when we need it far from where it ends up being used. To me code, energy, and even Thomas Thwaites Toaster all share a common thread: Elevating the complexities of day-to-day life.

In my own way, this week's assignment helped bring me back to the core question of why I am here at ITP: To create work that explains things that are often invisible (some may say intangible).

... so where does this leave me for the CFP?

Right now I don't have much besides questions such as:

  • What is the weight of code and what material would it be?
  • How much energy does it take to send a text, in calories and phone battery?
    • To 'visualize' the energy of care and communication
  • How can materiality be used to represent bits and bytes?

Giving space for projects and ideas to breathe is a skill I think I need to practice more of. Even taking small moments throughout the week to think about this course has been helpful though.

Sketches to come so stay tuned
